Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden which was previously known as the Model Floriculture Center, is the name of a tulip plantation located in Srinagar. It is the biggest garden of tulips in Asia that covers an area of around 30 acres. It is located at the slopes of the Zabarwan Range with an overview of Dal Lake. The garden was inaugurated in 2007 in order to promote tourism and floriculture within Kashmir Valley. The garden is constructed on a sloped ground with a terraced design consisting seven terraces. Alongside tulips, different species of flowers like such as daffodils, hyacinths, and ran are also present.

The Tulip Festival is an annual event which is designed to highlight the variety of flowers that are in the gardens as a part of the tourism efforts of government officials. Government of Jammu and Kashmir. It’s held at the springtime season’s beginning in the Kashmir valley.

Here are some interesting facts concerning Tulip garden:

    • A smooth cruise of just 9 km from Srinagar through the tranquil Dal Lake towards the south leads our visitors to the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden.
    • This garden lies on its gentle slopes powerful Zabarwan hills. It is flanked by a well-maintained green golf course to North and the stunning Dal Lake almost washes its entrance to the west.
    • An atmosphere of historical significance and elegant elegance are provided by the adjacent Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal complexes that are adjacent to this Tulip Garden.
    • The moment you step into this garden is like taking in the beauty of the paradise that God wanted it to be. The eyes are drawn to the many linear running rows that are more than a million different tulip colors.
    • The garden is filled with the colors of yellow, red, orange mauve, purple and red Tulips to mention some. In addition, there are many multi-colored hybrids as well. Nature has wildly wilted with the colors that these flowers hybridize.

  • The flowers also come with their own distinctive designs. Some are hemispherical , like the turban, some are more extended, while others are strewn with petals, or have open and upwardly flowing petals , and sepals that resemble sparks that are bursting out.
  • Each hybrid is cultivated in its distinctive flower bed that is approximately 1 meter in width and 80 meters long.
  • The Tulip Garden was constructed by cutting into seven terraces on a gentle slope ground. A turn any direction will leave us captivated by the multiple tiers of flowers.
  • A gentle climb uphill brings us to the gorgeous fruit trees that line the edges of the garden. The thin leaves of the tree are adorned by a myriad of colored buds and blooms. As these trees haven’t yet sprouted their leaves following the winter, the lush flowers appear beautiful when set against a sparkling blue sky.
  • In the distance, to the right further upslope, the Pari Mahal happily smiles at the tulip scapes similar to an elderly queen who looking at her beautiful progenitors getting older.
  • When looking downhill, the eyes run through the mosaic of tulips. The design is made by the compactly laid complementary and different colored flowers that appear to stretch all the way towards the shores of Dal Lake.
  • The lake itself has beautiful fountains that float.
  • Alongside tulips, other bulbs that are grown in the garden are Hyacinths, Narcissus, Daffodils, Muscaria and Iris.
  • A tulip is approximately 6 cm in length with an apex with a sharp tapering shape and a curvaceous base that is gradually curvaceous. Each flower is composed of three sepals and three petals that seem to be huddled together as the bud that is half open. It has the size of 4-6cm. The typical flower grows in a single plant, which is around 1 to 2 feet tall. The tulip plant produces six to twelve long sliver-shaped green leaves. However , certain varieties in the Netherlands have been known to produce up to four blooms per plant.

When these tulip-filled beds when viewed from at a far distance, it appears that a rainbow has fallen over the earth. This is why the universal desire of philosophers all over the world to get to the end of the rainbow, is symbolically satisfied with these beds.

Nishat Bagh in Srinagar

Comments Off on Nishat Bagh in Srinagar

Nishat Bagh is a terraced Mughal garden that was constructed on the eastern shore of Dal Lake, close to Srinagar in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is the second biggest Mughal gardens within the Kashmir Valley. The biggest in terms of size of all is Shalimar Bagh, which is situated on the bank of Dal Lake. “Nishat Bagh” is Urdu that translates to “Garden of Joy,” “Garden of Gladness” and “Garden of Delight.

The Nishat Bagh is located on the shores of Dal Lake, with the Zabarwan Mountains as its backdrop, Nishat Bagh is a paradise garden that has stunning views of the lake under its snow-capped Pir Panjal Mountain range which is located from towards the West side and west of the valley. The Bagh was planned and constructed during 1633. It was designed and built in 1633 by Asif Khan, the elder Brother of Nur Jehan.

An interesting story about the jealousy felt by his emperor Shah Jahan on beholding such beautiful gardens, that nearly shut down the garden for a time, is told. After Shah Jahan saw this garden following its completion in 1633, the emperor expressed his admiration of the beauty and grandeur of it. It is believed that he expressed his appreciation at least three times in front of Asif Khan the father of his children in the hope that he would give the garden to him. As the offer was not given by the Asif Khan Shah Jahan was piqued and was able to order the closing for the supply of water to the gardens. For a time the garden was abandoned. Asif Khan was depressed and devastated; he was not interested in the things. While he was reclining under the canopy of trees on one of the gardens his servant was courageous enough to switch off the water supply source that came from Shalimar Bagh. Shalimar Bagh. When Asif Khan was awakened by the sounds of water as well as the fountains the fountains were roaring, he immediately ordered the closure of the water sources, as he was afraid of the most severe punishment from the Emperor for this indifference. The servant was fortunate as well as Asif Khan Shaha Jahan, who had been informed of the incident in the garden was not bothered or irritated over the disobedience to his instructions. Instead, he praised the servant’s loyalty to his master. He then granted full restoration rights to the water supply to the garden for Asif Khan the Prime Minister of his country and father-in-law. Mughal Princess Zuhra Begum was laid to rest in the garden of her father. She is the daughter of Mughal Emperor Alamgir II, and grandchild of the Emperor Jahandar Shah.

Layout

Although the design in Nishat Bagh was based on the fundamental conceptual model that was used in The Persian garden, the layout was required to be redesigned to meet the topography and water sources at the location chosen in the Kashmir valley. The design rather than being a central with four arms radiating with a square-shaped pattern, like in Chahar (suited for flat country sides) it was altered to an axial flow pattern to accommodate the hill’s terrain, with the water sources coming from the top and ending at the bottom. This led to the layout as a rectangular rather than the square design. This made it easier to eliminate the long sides. So, a rectangular design that had an east-west length of 548 meters (1,798 feet) and a width of 338 meters (1,109 feet) was chosen.

Architecture

This is why Nishat Bagh as laid out in the present is a large series of terraces that is lined with avenues of cypress and chinar trees, that begins from the lake’s shore and then stretches all the way to an artificial wall at the hill’s end. The hill rises up from it’s edge, Dal Lake, it has twelve 12 terraces that represent the twelve Zodiacal signs. It has two sections, which are the public garden and the private one to be used for Zanana or harem in comparison to all four areas of Shalimar Bagh; this difference is due in part to the fact the Nishad Bagh was a catering establishment for The Mughal Emperor, whereas Nishad Bagh belonged to a gentleman of his court and was and was a noble. However, there are certain similarities to the Shalimar Bagh, such as the stone channel that is polished and terraces. The water source to both gardens is the identical. They are situated in an east-west orientation The upper terrace houses the Zenana garden, while the bottom terrace is linked to the Dal Lake. In recent times the lower terrace has joined with the road that leads to it. A spring known as the Gopi Thirst supplies a clean water for the gardens. There are some ancient Mughal period structures near the Bagh.

The main canal that runs through the garden starting at the top it is 4 meters (13 feet) wide and features the thickness of around 20 cm (7.9 inches). The water runs in a cascade that runs from at the top, to the next terrace on the road that can also be accessible from the Dal Lake through a shikara ride. Water flows from terraces to another facilitated by the steps of stone that give the sparkle that the water flows. In all terraces, the fountains have pools along the water channel. In the crossings of the channel benches are made available for visitors to sit down and take in the beautiful garden and the flowing fountain jets.

The Twelve Terraces

The particulars of these twelve terraces have been documented in the original construction:
  • One terrace acts as a storage chamber that is connected to the flow that flows from the garden.
  • The second terrace is accessible via the gate. The terrace is home to five fountains, which are fed with by the third terrace which it flows down to the bottom terrace.
  • The third terrace is of distinct design. The water chute features five arched niches that open in the front, and niches similar to those at the corners. An enclosure (baradari) is a two-story structure that was present when it was first constructed and has since been removed. Stairways on each side of the channel, take you onto the third terrasse that has a rectangular chamber that has five fountains. The staircase (four steps) both sides of the channel will lead onto the 4th terrace.
  • The fourth terrace is composed of two levels. It is an water channel as well as the square pool. Stairways with seven steps take you towards the fiveth terrace.
  • The fifth terrace is where there is a stone-built bench across the channel for you to take in the stunning views. The fifth terrace also includes an enclosed square with five fountains.
  • The sixth terrace is on two levels, with five fountains and a distinctive pavement pattern.t
  • Seventh terrace. the same pattern is repeated.
  • 8. The 8th terrace just an water channel or chute.
  • The ninth terrace, located at the bottom of two stairways there is an Octagonal bench. The pool of this terrace is surrounded by nine fountains.
  • The stairs leading to the tenth terrace run along the walls of the side that contain there is only a water chute that has fountains is installed.
  • The paths are engraved and take you to an impressive eleventh terrace with twenty-five fountains within a pool. The highest point of this impressive terrace is the final terrace.
  • Its Zenana chamber, which is the twelveth terrace is enclosed in front by a 5.5 meters (18 feet) high wall that has an archway of blinds. One arch on this blind façade opens to the twelveth terrace. Two small , octagonal towers each side of the retaining walls offer glimpses of lower terraces. The two-storey pavilion can be found surrounded by gorgeous garden that is lush with plants.

Of every terrace, this is thought to be the most stunning because of the twenty-three niches within the arched recess in front of the waterfall. Lighted lamps were originally intended to be positioned in these niches. The second terrace also features an the most beautiful Persian pansies and lilacs, along with sparkling water cascading down the chute, creating an amazing sight.Another fascinating feature of this area is the Nishat Bagh is of the numerous marble thrones that were that are situated at the top of the waterfall and along the channel.

House Boat in Srinagar

Blogs

Comments Off on House Boat in Srinagar

The experience of staying on a houseboat in Srinagar is an exceptional and unforgettable experience. But, picking a boat can be difficult. There are over 1,000 of them in the interconnected Dal as well as Nigeen lake. Which one do you prefer? Here are some things to consider in making your choice.

Location, Location, Location!

If you are looking for tranquility and peace or prefer to be in close proximity to action is the main factor to consider when you are deciding on which hotel to stay in. Dal Lake is famous and is where most houses are. It’s also extremely busy and commercial (others would say it’s vibrant). In certain parts within Dal Lake, the houseboats are uninterestingly lined in a row, bumper to bumper, along the canal. The lake is enormous and you should be aware of what part of it your boat is located in. However, Nigeen Lake is much smaller, more tranquil and more picturesque.

There are people who feel lonely in their home, but. It’s all based on your preferences!

Access

Another aspect to take into consideration when selecting a houseboat for Srinagar is how mobile you wish to be. A lot of boats can only be accessible through the shikara (smaller rowboats) but some have road access as well. If you’re someone that enjoys the freedom to go and come at your own pace is a good idea to select the latter.

Food

The houseboats are available at different prices depending on whether you book the room for yourself or get meals included. If you’re on a vessel in an area with less privacy it’s best to have dinner and breakfast in order to ensure convenience. The quality of the food served will differ on boats, so make sure you know the menu you’ll receive, including the type of food, vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

Size, Type, and Cost of Houseboats

Houseboats are available in a variety of sizes and are rated by the tourism department of the government. The categories span from the Deluxe (most vessels fall in that category) up to the D grade. The set rates for each category can be found at the Kashmir Houseboat Owner’s Association (situated just opposite the Tourist Reception Centre at Srinagar). Expect to pay between 8,000- 15,000 rupees for a luxury houseboat, or 4,000 to 7,000 rupees for a reasonably priced houseboat.

The biggest houseboats can accommodate four or five bedrooms. They are ideal for large groups traveling together.

If you’re a couple, then you’ll prefer to live in smaller boats since you’ll have greater privacy and less disturbance. Houseboats are extremely loved by Indian families, but Unfortunately, they can be extremely noisy, with no attention to peace. The walls of these houses are not soundproof, also, which means that you could be snoring from their roar.

Common Areas

The houseboats usually come with separate lounge and dining rooms, and balconies at the front that faces the lake. Many houseboats come with rooftops accessible. There are some that are equipped with gardens. These are additional spaces that are attractive since they allow additional space to guests.

Positioning

In contrast to the houseboats of Kerala, These houseboats can’t be moved. They are permanently docked on the lake. Houseboats that are docked longways on the lake typically have a view of the lake through their rooms. The bedrooms may also have views of the neighboring houseboat, but the balconies of their rooms will face the lake.

Facilities

The power supply can go off often. If you are concerned you should be aware of whether the houseboat has a generator. Other aspects to be considered (depending on how important to you) is whether the houseboat has wireless Internet as well as hot water that is available 24 hours a day and TVs. Also, make sure that costs for shikara trips between and to the boat are included in the price.

Houseboat Owners

The houseboats are typically family-owned and operated. A houseboat experience is like being a mix between hotels and residences. While the accommodations are private the owners of houseboats often give their guests personal attention. This is extremely beneficial while you’re there since you’ll have access to lots of local information. Be aware that there are many owners who are not trustworthy, though. Check reviews and the Internet for any information prior to making a reservation to ensure that the proprietor has a good standing.

Tours

The owners of the houseboat usually arrange excursions for their guests. They can be very quick with guests attending their tour Be cautious. Do your research, particularly in relation to the cost.

Other Things to Consider

If you’re in a tight budget guidebooks often suggest hiring a shikara to tour on the water until you come across the houseboat that you like. But, shikaras are usually associated with specific houseboat owners, and they will steer you to the houses that pay commissions.

Rates decrease significantly (by more than 50 percent) in the winter season’s low season which is why you must bargain. Although some houses are listed on hotels’ booking sites, however, it is best to call the owners directly to inquire about the most competitive rates. In addition from April- to the end of June, houseboats are in high demand. is limited, particularly in Nigeen Lake.

Comments Off on Visit to Dal Lake

The Kashmir valley is home to one of the most breathtaking landscapes and has claimed to be “paradise on earth” but Dal Lake is widely regarded as”the “jewel in the crown of Kashmir”. A little more local to the area it is also known as being the “jewel of Srinagar”. People who aren’t familiar with the location of the lake could be a bit surprised to discover that it is far from being an isolated beauty place, Dal Lake is sited within the main town of Srinagar and therefore is regarded as an “urban lake”.

Srinagar

Srinagar is home to approximately 1.5 million people and is the capital of summer for Jammu as well as Kashmir. The concept that two cities have capitals might appear odd, but it’s not a unique situation. Three Indian states operate in this arrangement. Its roots are that date back to the time which the Maharajas controlled and were able to govern from various places to take advantage of the most favorable weather, based on the season that the seasons change. It is interesting to note that just southwest from Jammu as well as Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh State is a state with a similar arrangement. its capital city, Dharamshala, contains the residence of the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration (government exiled).

Dal Lake Morphology

Visitors might be shocked to learn the fact that Dal Lake is a single body of water since it appears as being a variety of lakes and swimming pools, interconnected and separated by numerous causeways, buildings built on stilts floating gardens, houseboats and floating gardens.

The lake actually grew by five lakes including Nehru Park, Nishat, Hazratbal, Nagin and Brari. The lake is quite shallow and has a maximum depth of approximately 6 meters and currently covers an area of approximately 16 sq km , but it previously covered an area of about 22 square kilometers.

Access to Dal Lake

As an urban lake, it is easy to access with roads that run around it. getting to this part of the world is simple with a great highway network and an airport located just 7 km from Badgam. It is worth noting that there is no railway service in this area.

Dal Lake and Tourism

The lake is an important tourist attraction and a place to relax and, while it does offer various commercial applications, like fishing and the harvesting of weeds to make compost however, they are of little importance. One of the most striking aspects that the lake has from the standpoint from a tourist’s perspective is the view that hundreds of housesboats, moored near the shorelines.

Dal Lake House Boats

The first houseboats were built during the time that followed British colonial rule. The splendor of this region of the country enticed a lot of the British however The Maharajas of Kashmir strictly controlled the construction of homes. The British could not overcome the restrictions simply by taking to the water. Houseboats of the past were constructed in a distinctive British design, leading to being described as “each a little piece of England”. Houseboats of today continue to provide the luxury and elegance that is evident from an earlier time. Many people choose to stay in one of these distinctive floating houses, but there are also high-quality hotels and restaurants along the lakefront.

The water is a top priority for a lot of people. One of the most popular methods of transportation is the shikava vessel which has been described as being the gondolas of Kashmir. Houseboat owners typically offer shikavas to enjoyment of guests, and other boats are available for hire at fair, but typically, prices are negotiable.

What to See at Dal Lake

There are numerous interesting locations to see, such as the Shankaracharya Temple, an ancient one or the throngs of lotus blooms in August and July. There are also many floating gardens that are usually moored within close proximity to houseboats. The gardens are constructed by cutting sections of matted plants that are cut loose and then moved into place. Unsurprisingly, water-loving plants like melons, tomatoes and cucumbers seem to thrive under these conditions.

There’s always a quantity of activity around the lake, and it also hosts a floating market , where vendors sell their products straight from their boat. In some regions where swimming is popular, so is canoeing as well as other kinds of boating. In winter you may also have an opportunity to ski.

When to Visit Dal Lake

The most sought-after period to travel to Dal Lake is between June between June and August, when the weather is the most enjoyable. The average summer temperature ranges between 12 and 30 degrees Celsius providing a relaxing escape from the hot temperatures of summer that prevail in a lot of India. Many people support the Maharaja’s old choice in his summer’s escape.

However, winter has its unique attractions, and it is the time when the stunning beauty of the landscape can be seen in its most stunning splendor. The winter temperatures range from between 1 and 11 degree Celsius however, during a severe winter, temperatures can fall to as low as minus 11 degrees. At such temperatures, the water’s surface the lake could be frozen. Naturally, stepping into the frozen water is extremely risky and should never be attempted without taking expert guidance from experts in the local area.

Dal Lake Protection

Dal Lake gives you the opportunity to enjoy a serene and unbeatable connection to the past. The lake might appear to be to be unchanging, but that is not the case. The water might appear clear and clean, but in the past, the quality of the water has steadily deteriorated due to various reasons, including contamination caused by waste from houseboats, which includes wastewater. A delicate equilibrium of ecosystems of the lake has been disturbed which has led to some species flourishing while others which then disappear. Scientists refer to this issue as Eutrophication. If left unaddressed the eutrophication process could kill the majority of the species living in the lake with monocultures replacing biodiversity, and algae replacing other plants and reducing the oxygenation that flow into the lake. Fortunately, this issue is being acknowledged as well as the Indian government has enacted an ambitious plan to return the lake back to its earlier splendour. There are no new houseboats allowed to use the lake, and there are plans to move the ones currently in the water. There is also talks of the total removal of houseboats, but this is a highly controversial issue and many residents view these boats as a major tourist attraction that is are a part of the charm that the lake has. A decision to remove them would appear unlikely. It is possible to argue the idea that Dal Lake without houseboats would be like Paris sans the Eiffel Tower.
